Tragic Accident Claims Life of Experienced Motorcycle Racer

On August 23, 2023, it was confirmed by the organizers of the Manx Grand Prix Races that Ian Bainbridge, a seasoned classic motorcycle racer, tragically lost his life in a crash during a qualifying session for the 2023 Manx GP. Bainbridge, who was 69 years old, was involved in the accident while exiting Kirk Michael village, located just north of Peel. This incident occurred during his first lap of the first qualifying session for the 2023 MGP. As a result, the qualifying session was immediately halted and eventually canceled.

Bainbridge had been actively participating in classic motorcycle racing since 2005 when he first raced on the Mountain Course. Throughout the years, he had only missed two MGP events. In 2010, he achieved his best result, finishing in eighth place in the Classic Senior Manx GP.

Bainbridge, originally from Barnard Castle, leaves behind a loving family and friends who deeply cared for him. His daughter Victoria expressed her grief, stating, "He was doing what he loved, and we have been informed that he did not suffer, which brings some comfort during this difficult time. I am at a loss for words, but I know he will be greatly missed as a father, son, husband, grandfather, and friend, with his infectious smile and silly sense of humor."

Victoria also mentioned that the family may not be able to respond to messages on social media for a while but would appreciate anyone who knew Bainbridge sharing any photos and memories they have of him. She believes that when the family is ready, they will find solace in these mementos.

Tributes have been pouring in on social media from fellow racers, fans, classic motorcycle racing clubs, and all those who had the pleasure of knowing Bainbridge. It is evident that he was highly regarded and respected within the racing community that he was so proud to be a part of.

Tragically, Bainbridge's death marks the second fatality during the 2023 Manx Grand Prix qualifying days, following the passing of Gary Vines at the start of the qualifying week. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the entire family, friends, colleagues, and fans of Ian Bainbridge during this incredibly difficult time.
